Abstract

Cancer of the esophagus was noted more than 2000 years ago in the Honan province of northern China. In the Linhsien county of Honan province, where the “hard-of-swallowing disease” had been quite prevalent for many years, there existed a “Throat God Temple” until 1927, when it was de-stroyed during the war (Yang 1980). Cancer of theesophagus was also described by Jurgani, a Persian medical writer, as early as 1100 A. D. It is of interest to note that the highest incidence rates of esopha-geal cancer in the world are currently found in these two regions.
