Abstract

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States today. It is estimated by the American Cancer Society that nearly one million new cancer cases will be diagnosed in the United States in the year 1989. This figure excludes carcinomas in situ and nonmelanoma skin cancers. If these highly curable cancers were included, the number of new cancer cases would be increased by over 50%. The total number of cancer deaths in the United States during calendar year 1989 is estimated to be approximately half the number of new cancer cases diagnosed (roughly one-half million).
