Abstract
Since the initial report by Warren and Marshall in 1983 [25] and further description by the same authors [14] Campylobacter pylori (formerly Campylobacter pyloridis) or Gastric Campylobacter-like Organism type 1, GCLO-1 [18] has been detected through the world in antral mucosa of patients suffering from gastritis or peptic ulcer. Studies performed among a Belgian population of dyspeptic patients [4] revealed Campylobacter pylori (CP) in 53% of patients receiving routine endoscopies, primarily when duodenal ulcer or duodenitis was present. In a group of 552 patients with antral gastritis the activity and severity of inflammatory changes (evaluated according to modified Whitehead’s classification [26]) strongly correlated with the presence of CP [3]. None of 42 patients with normal antral histology was found to have CP.
