Abstract
A large amount of information was already available on the development and distribution of the “new type(s) of forest damage” in Germany when the French DEFORPA programme was launched in 1984/85. On the basis of field surveys and monitoring activities, several authors suggested that the novel forest decline had specific traits, some of which concerned stand and site characteristics (Krause et al. 1986; FBW 1986; Schütt and Cowling 1985; Moosmayer 1984,1986):
-
Physical soil parameters only slightly affect the novel type of forest decline while a natural dieback caused, for example, by climatic stress would more closely reflect soil water availability (Burschel 1985).
-
The new type of forest decline occurs on many different soil types, including calcareous. Although some regional studies have not shown any variance with soil chemistry (Schöpfer and Hradetzky 1984), decline seems overall to be related to nutrient poor soil conditions (Z — ttl 1985).
-
Forest management and silviculture have little influence on damage, which is not limited to unsuitable sites or to particular forest types. Damage is particularly marked in open and “natural” (mixed, multistoried) stands, while man-made, pure single-storied stands are less affected.
