Abstract
The literal meaning of asphyxia is “not to throb” or a “stop** of the pulse”. In clinical terms, asphyxia refers to the loss of consciousness as a result of too little oxygen. Today and during the intrapartum period, asphyxia is commonly referred to as intrapartum acidosis. One goal of modern obstetrics is the avoidance of such an event. Cardiotocography and intermittent scalp blood sampling are the established diagnostic procedures in this field. However, the diagnosis of intrapartum acidosis is not always reliable without too many interventions on behalf of the fetus and/or mother.
