Zusammenfassung
Neben den verschiedenen psychotherapeutischen Methoden, der Elektrokrampftherapie und der Schlafentzugsbehandlung, gehört die Lichttherapie zur bekanntesten nichtpharmakologischen Behandlungsmethode bei Patienten mit depressiver Symptomatik. Lichttherapie wurde zum erstenmal parallel zur Beschreibung eines depressiven Syndroms vorgestellt, bei dem Exazerbationen häufig jahreszeitliche Gebundenheit aufweisen. Scit der Erstbeschreibung dieser „seasonal affective disorder“(Rosenthal et al. 1984 a), gibt es viele Untersuchungen, die einen positiven Effekt der Lichttherapie auf depressive Symptomatik belegen (Übersichten bei Rosenthal u. Blehar 1989; Thompson u. Silverstone 1989; Kasperetal. 1988; Termanu. Terman 1990; Blehar u. Lewy 1990). Scit kurzer Zeit findet eine Ausweitung der einfach durchzuführenden und nebenwirkungsarmen Behandlung statt. Vereinzelt wird sie von niedergelassenen Ärzten angeboten, zunehmend auch von psychiatrischen Polikliniken. Mit der größer werdenden Publizität in verschiedenen Medien (mehrere Fernsehsendungen, Reportagen in überregionalen Journalen) ist der Bekanntheitsgrad bei den Patienten im Vergleich mit anderen psychiatrischen Behandlungsverfahren groß.
