Summary

Huntington’s disease is a neuropsychiatric disorder disturbing intellectual, affective and motor functions. Because of the onset in the middle of life and the autosomal dominant inheritance this disease causes multiple pyschosocial problems for family members involved.

Affected persons react with depressive and aggressive behavior problems. Partners are overchanged with caring duties. Especaially in cases of early manifestation this disease leads to family stress and family conflicts. Presymptomatic (and prenatal) diagnosis of Huntington’s disease has recently become possible using gene technology. The psychosocial problems associated with the new method must be considered.
