Abstract
This paper will review the applicability of expert systems to Computer Integrated Manufacturing (CIM) and explore a new type of CIM system in which the use of expert systems might be the only way these systems can be put into commerical operation.
There are many CIM system elements avai1able today such as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM), Production Activity Control (PAC), Manufacturing Resource Planning (MRP II), etc. Each of these systems can benefit from the use of Expert Systems to help in decision making and rules application. In some commercial packages this is being done today.
There is a new class of CIM system - Computer Aided Administration (CAA) - which is just beginning to be understood and defined. Expert Systems seem to be particularily well suited to supporting some information control and distribution rules typical of an administration environment which classical programing techniques cannot easily cope with.
This paper is based on work done at Northern Telecom on CIM administration systems.
