Abstract
Kwan and Fatt [6] have pointed out that the palpebral conjunctiva is a particularly suitable position in which oxygen tension (PO2) may be sensed. This structure, which assists in the oxygenation of the cornea when the latter is not exposed to the surrounding air, possesses a dense vascular bed with the conjunctival capillaries located very close to the surface layers, hence minimizing the distance over which oxygen must diffuse.
