Abstract
The methyl viologen herbicide paraquat, given in single subcutaneous injection of 25 mg/kg body weight (bw) to different inbred mouse lines, caused different toxicities and resulted the recognition of sensitive and resistant strains. In general higher resistance was found in mice of H-2b than in those of H-2k and H-2d haplotypes, which correlated with their cellular superoxide dismutase (SOD) level. Increased resistance and cellular SOD content could be developed by repeated sublethal dosage of paraquat in A/PH k/d recombinant mice. Paraquat tolerance seems to be regulated by the genes identical with SOD regulatory genes linked to the H-2 region and the background genes are of low significance.
