Renal and Urinary Kallikreins

Bradykinin, Kallidin and Kallikrein

Part of the book series: Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology ((HEP,volume 25 / 1))

Abstract

The serine proteases of the mammalian kidney and urine, known as kallikreins, are generally considered to be glandular kallikreins, distinct from the plasma enzyme and its precursor. (The isolation, purification and behavior of renal and urinary kallikrein have been discussed in detail elsewhere in this volume by Fiedler.) Despite the long continued interest in the properties of these purified glandular kallikreins, there is little information available about the cellular localization, regulation, or role of the enzymes of the entire kallikrein-kinin system within mammalian kidney and urine. However, interest in the kallikrein-kinin system and its relation to kidney function has increased markedly since publication of the previous edition of the Handbook volume on this subject (Erdös, 1970). This interest has been stimulated by studies on the localization of the enzyme and by relating both kallikrein and kinins to specific renal functions, to certain hormones which affect the kidney, or to some common pathologic states.
