Abstract
Traumatized patients are increasingly receiving initial treatment and transportation from rescue services with helicopters. In Fig. 1, patients who were brought to the Department of Neurosurgery of the University of Bonn as emergency cases are grouped according to the means of transportation. Since the middle of 1974, we observed that about 30% of the patients were transported by helicopter. Of the emergency cases 25% were sent from the emergency medical service of the city of Bonn and about 45% from the various emergency services of the surrounding region. Despite the use of helicopters, the prognosis for serious craniocerebral injuries has not improved. Other study groups have had similar experience (3, 7). For that reason, we investigated whether it is possible to ascertain basic differences in the effectiveness of the initial treatment depending on the various means of transportation or on the emergency services on the basis of findings made upon admission and after treatment.
