Abstract

Human postheparin lipolytic activities (PHLA) are considered to bemajor factors in the removal of triglycerides from circulating plasma lipoproteins (1). It was assumed, that this glycerol ester hydrolase activity is due to lipoprotein lipase (LPL) which is found in a variety of tissues, including heart, lung, intestine, kidney, sceletal muscle, mammary gland and adipose tissues (2). •However, high sodium chloride and protamine concentrations which eliminate lipoprotein lipase activity from crude tissue preparations, had inconsistent effects on the activity of postheparin plasma (3, 4). Heparin containing media release an enzyme from the liver either on perfusion through the vascular bed or by the addition to liver cell homogenates, which strongly resembles the salt and protamine resistant activity of PHLA (5, 6, 7). Therefore it has been suggested that PHLA consists of at least two triglyceride hydrolase activities, one originating form the liver (HTGL), the othermainly released from adipose tissue (LPL).
