The 133Xe Inhalation Method: Assessment of rCBF in Carotid Endarterectomy

  • Chapter
Cerebral Circulation and Metabolism

Abstract

One advantage of the noninvasive 133Xe inhalation method (5) is the opportunity to acquire adequate normal control data that can serve as a baseline for interpretation of patient findings. Another advantage is the ability to perform serial bilateral studies, thus making it possible to assess changes in regional cerebral blood flow related to the natural history of a disorder or to therapeutic intervention. The present paper describes the application of this method to patients undergoing unilateral internal carotid endarterectomy.
