Abstract

In this paper an attempt will be made to describe the actions of cholinomimetic drugs on the peripheral adrenergic nerve fibres as far as its capacity to retain, or to release, the transmitter is concerned. The conventional classification of cholinomimetic responses in nicotinic and muscarinic ones will be adhered to. As to be shown by the results, the classification can also be extended to describe the responses of the peripheral adrenergic nerve fibre to acetylcholine, nicotine, methacholine, and to several of their congeners. Hexamethonium was used to antagonize the activation of nicotine receptors (in the following the more frequently applied term “nicotinic” will be used); atropine, under more careful control of dose-response relationships, was employed to antagonize activation of muscarine (in the following “muscarinic”) receptors.
