Abstract

The subject of transition from laminar to turbulent flow is currently being investigated in a number of laboratories. Much of the activity has to do with the extent of laminar flow on bodies at supersonic speeds and on how the position of transition, or the Reynolds number at which transition occurs, depends on the steadiness of the stream, roughness of the surface, or heat transfer to or from the surface. Certain investigations, conducted mostly at low speeds, attempt to probe into the mechanism of transition. A recent survey of the subject has been given by Dryden [1].
