Zusammenfassung
Wenige Nationen haben es in gleichem Maß als nötig erachtet, sich stets neu zu definieren, sich gerade auch als Gesellschaft und Kultur zu preisen und abzugrenzen, wie die USA seit ihrer Unabhängigkeit. Von der Revolutionszeit an zieht sich eine Serie von Amerika-Projektionen durch die amerikanische Literatur. Während etwa Joel Barlow in »The Prospect of Peace« (1778) vom Einheitsgedanken ausgeht: »One friendly Genius fires the numerous whole,/From glowing Georgia to the frozen pole«, feiert Walt Whitman 1855 im Vorwort zu seinem Gedichtband Leaves of Grass die Vielfalt: »Here is not merely a nation but a nation of nations.« Die von Philosophen und Politikern, von Autoren und Kritikern sowie von zahlreichen namenlosen Amerikanern und Amerikanerinnen betriebene Suche nach dem spezifisch Amerikanischen brachte unter anderem folgende Vorstellungen hervor: das Idealbild vom Schmelztiegel der Völker; den Mythos vom ›Amerikanischen Adam‹ als Personifizierung des (gerade auch sittlichen) Neubeginns; die Konzeption der frontier, der Siedlungsgrenze, als den Nationalcharakter prägender Ort der Begegnung von wilder Natur und Zivilisation; die Idee des ›Westens‹, der zum Projektionsraum persönlicher wie gesellschaftlicher Zukunftserwartungen gemacht wurde; die oft als ›Amerikanischer Traum‹ bezeichnete und bereits in der Declaration of Independencemit »the pursuit of happiness« angesprochene Hoffnung auf Selbstverwirklichung; und nicht zuletzt die an gleicher Stelle als weiteres menschliches Grundrecht erwähnte, vage und in vielerlei Richtung interpretierbare Idee der Freiheit.
