Abstract

We report measurements of the valence band structure in CuGa1−xInxS2 alloys which resolve the recent controversy regarding the valence band structures of CuGaS2 and CuInS2. We find that (1) the spin-orbit splitting is negative in CuInS2, (2) the crystal-field splitting dominates the valence band structure in CuGaS2, and (3) the vanishing crystal-field splitting in CuInS2 results from an accidental cancellation of three competing phenomena.
