Abstract
Ulcerative colitis is an inflammatory bowel condition that has multiple indications for operative intervention. Patients with ulcerative colitis are at risk for refractory symptoms of abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, as well as substantially increased risk for neoplastic changes over the course of their disease. Emergent operations are performed in the setting of sepsis and hemodynamic instability from fulminant colitis, hemorrhage, perforation, and those failing maximal inpatient medical therapy. Elective operations are performed in the setting of refractory symptoms, dysplasia, and carcinoma. Operative management for these scenarios is described.
