Clinical Decision Making in Colorectal Surgery

Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a functional disorder defined by the presence of abdominal discomfort and altered bowel habits in the absence of an organic cause. Various factors contribute to the pathology of IBS and include changes to the gut microbiome, intestinal permeability, motility, visceral sensation, and psychosocial state. Surgery has had a limited role in the management of IBS yet a high surgical rate exists in these patients. Newer minimally invasive procedures such as sacral nerve stimulation may be of use in patients who are refractory to conservative management to reduce symptoms and increase quality of life.
