Clinical Decision Making in Colorectal Surgery

Abstract

Colonic stricture arises from a diverse array of etiologies and can require a myriad of management approaches depending on the underlying cause. Strictures can result from inflammatory bowel disease, infection, diverticulitis, iatrogenic injury, or malignancy. Management decisions are based upon the underlying cause of the stricture and incorporate techniques including medical therapies, endoscopic stenting, and surgical intervention. Effective identification of the underlying cause of the stricture is essential to allow selection of the most appropriate treatment and avoidance of life-threatening complications.
