Abstract
There is nothing dearest for a modern man than civil liberties. This spell is likely over in today’s digital technology world. Since the lifeworld has turned into the global realm with a technologically connected infrastructure, there is nothing more about information to stay in the dark. You can lie about your personal information but digital surveillance technology can recognize you from your face, Iris eye, and fingerprint. All these identification techniques mark a new era of surveillance in that privacy should be traded off for security. To what extent is surveillance technology useful for security and dangerous for democracy? This chapter attempts to unfold and divulge the potential and consequences of surveillance technology for humanity.
