Abstract

Maternal safety and health outcomes depend on a confluence of factors affected by cultural values. The focus in this chapter is the influence of the cultural value of individualism on maternal safety and health outcomes in relation to intimate partner violence, neighborhood security, access to weapons, and human trafficking. While a foundational and positive cultural value, this cultural value, in the context of adverse social determinants of health, can contribute to loss of autonomy and safety for mothers. Case studies illustrate examples of selected threats to maternal safety and health.
