Abstract
Artificial intelligence (AI) will have a profound impact on the economy and trade. This chapter examines the scope of changes AI will thus trigger in international trade. This chapter concentrates on the issue as it pertains to the European Union (EU) member states, the changes on the EU internal market, the EU’s relations with outside partners, and as set within a wider context. The analysis was conducted amid the conditions caused by the slowing economy of 2018 and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. Crises often create new conditions and accelerate changes, which is supported by arguments from different fields. This chapter suggests that an acceleration of change had taken place and was caused by policies applied to overcome the pandemic and by changes in market players’ behaviours. This chapter addresses three questions: Will the volume of trade expand or shrink in the nearest future? What trends can be expected in different groups of states using the criteria of advancement of development? Is AI a lever that stimulates the evolution of international trade?
