Abstract
A corporate lawyer committed to good government and social welfare, Chadbourne led Fiorello LaGuardia’s campaign for mayor of New York City in 1933, and successive campaigns in 1937 and 1941. In his early career he worked as Theodore Roosevelt’s New York confidant, connecting the president with his home state and sharing the complexities and inner workings of party machinery. In 1912, he joined the Progressive Party campaign. As a backroom politico, Chadbourne shares intimate stories about the political backbiting and double-dealing that Roosevelt faced at local, state, and national levels.
