Abstract
Stanley Isaacs was a mainstay of the New York City political scene from 1903 to his death in 1962. Like many men of his generation, Theodore Roosevelt inspired his sense of civic duty and his commitment to independent politics. He tells the Roosevelts about the various political battles Roosevelt faced during and after the presidency and how those battles shaped the direction of national politics. He recalls the incidents vividly and portrays well-known political actors. Roosevelt emerges as a central figure for progressives of the early twentieth century and the liberal predecessor to FDR.
