Abstract
Almost all suicidal behaviors, including self-immolation, are more common in young women and need prevention strategies that are context specific and focus on the unique needs of this group. This chapter describes why we need to discuss prevention of suicide in young women as a distinct method and also discusses the confluence of diverse, yet significant, social, cultural, psychological and behavioral factors that have a role to play in women who try to kill or harm themselves. Along with description of gender-neutral preventive approaches with universal, selected and indicated strategies, we discuss a gender-specific framework as well. Hopefully, this will help us point towards gender sensitive and region-specific intervention strategies to effectively protect young women at risk from suicide across all cultures.
