Familial Control, Collectivity and Gendered Shame: Past and Present Vulnerabilities

Violence, Gender and Affect

Abstract

The article analyses vulnerabilities in the context of familial relations. Forms of domestic violence (DV) that are linked to conservative gender order, and an understanding of shame and honour as something collective rather than individual, are being investigated. The approach includes the idea of partial parallels between the historical roots of DV in Europe and the topical issue of honour-related violence (HRV) in today’s multicultural societies. It emphasizes the need to discuss cultural conventions, perceptions of gender, honour and shame, and their possible connections to violent behaviour whenever this is relevant—but without demonizing minorities. It is necessary to consider whether and in what contexts gender roles, collectivity and other aspects of social norms, such as the patriarchal worldview, may contribute to violence in close relationships. Shifting the shame from the victims onto the abuse and violence themselves will benefit societies at large. In conclusion, it is critical to focus on gender equality and sensitive but forthright sex education, while promoting human rights also in the family context. Victim services and instruments for prevention and intervention must be developed accordingly, this also being in line with the obligations of the Council of Europe Istanbul Convention.
