High-dose chemotherapy with hematologic rescue for high-risk non-seminomatous germ cell tumors

Abstract

Despite progress in the treatment of disseminated non-seminomatous germ cell tumors (NSGCT), 20–30%of patients do not achieve CR or relapse [1]. We evaluated high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) followed by autologous bone-marrow transplantation (ABMT) in selected poor-prognosis NSGCT patients. These patients were young, had a chemosensitive tumor with a well-established dose-response relationship [7–10] and rare bone marrow involvement [2]. The HDC associated Cisplatin, Etoposide and Cyclophosphamide (PEC protocol) were used; Carboplatin recently replaced Cisplatin in a pilot study.
