Summary
The chromatographic and physical properties of surface-modified pre-coated supports for thin-layer chromatography are discussed. For reversed-phase supports substance Rf values decrease with the length of the alkyl chain and the degree of modification. Likewise, for a given solvent of constant composition the times required for development become longer. Owing to their pronounced hydrophobic nature reversed-phase supports which have been modified to the maximum extent can only be used with mobile phases having a water content not exceeding approximately 40%. This limitation does not apply, however, to reversed-phase supports having a defined low degree of surface modification.
Similarly, the hydrophilic aminopropyl and cyanopropyl modified plates do not impose any limitations to solvent composition. These medium-polar pre-coated layers can offer a wide range of interactions including ion exchange, adsorption, and hydrophobic interactions.
