On the Ultrastructure of Invertebrate Hemocytes: An Interpretation of their Role in Comparative Hematology

Abstract

The comparative, morphological investigation of blood cells is restricted mainly to experiments with vertebrates. Statements about structure, origin, and functions of invertebrate blood cells are extremely fragmentary and are mostly based upon light microscopic findings. There exists very little information about the course of blood cell development and functional relationships in different animal species. However, there are several trends in cell differentiation: formation of erythrocytelike cells (Figs. 1–6), appearance of coagulation cells (Figs. 7, 8), and the formation of amebocytes, which phagocytose foreign bodies (Figs. 9, 10). My investigations add some electron microscopic data on invertebrate blood cells to comparative hematology with the intention of contributing something to the morphology and the development of “blood” within phylogeny.
