On the Immediate Fate of Bacteria in the Land Snail Helix

Contemporary Topics in Immunobiology

Abstract

The fate of materials injected into molluscs and other facets of molluscan internal defense mechanisms have been investigated and discussed widely. The unifying vision among the investigators was that they saw in such studies a useful tool for invertebrate immunology. Cheng’s (1967b) account of defense mechanisms in molluscs remains an excellent working model. Based largely upon investigations by Stauber (1950), Tripp (1958a,b, 1960, 1961), Feng (1959, 1965a,b), Bang (1961), Michelson (1961, 1963) and last, but not least, his own group (Cheng, 1966, 1967a; Cheng and Coopermari, 1964, Cheng and Snyder, 1962), Cheng (1967b) has shown that a scheme can be drawn up as illustrated in Fig. 1. Studies on a variety of molluscs reveal that when small particles are introduced into the circulation they are rapidly cleared from the hemolymph. We may now ask the question: “What are the agents of clearance?”
