High-Resolution Scanning Electron Microscopy and Its Application to Research on Immunity and Aging

Immunology and Aging

Part of the book series: Comprehensive Immunology ((COMIMUN,volume 1))

Abstract

The importance of membrane molecules that function as receptors and antigens in aging is attested to by the fact that such molecules emerging late in life can evoke a response from the immune system that can lead to the destruction of cells possessing those specificities. Examples include encephalopathies of autoimmune etiology in which viral antigens appear on neurons and acquired late-adulthood anemias in which immunoglobulins (Ig) M or G are present on erythrocyte membranes.
