Abstract
Concepts of the nature of the glassy state of the chalcogenide glasses are primarily developed from the viewpoint of supercooling a melt from above the liquidus temperature through the glass transition range. It is tacitly assumed that the molecular configurations in the glassy state are only slightly perturbed from those of the liquid state during this quenching process. For many materials such as the As-S and As-Se glasses this appears to be the case. Thermal and optical studies on these systems have been able to discern only small differences due to quenching effects.
