Abstract

This book provides an overview of research on the relationship of the physical environment to the disablement process. The theme is how this interaction can be measured. The book was initially developed through a call for papers to present at a working conference where the authors engaged in intensive interaction and discussion. After the conference, revised drafts of the papers were submitted and some additional papers were added to increase the range of topics covered. The book covers a broad range of issues to expose the diversity of concerns and approaches that are currently being practiced. The contributions represent work from several countries: the United States, Canada, Sweden, and the Netherlands. They also represent many different disciplines: architecture, psychology, occupational therapy, orientation and mobility training, human factors, gerontology, and computer-aided design. These international and multi- disciplinary flavors have enriched the book significantly because each country and discipline has its own particular perspective on the issues.
