Abstract

This paper chronicles database redesign projects at two separate laboratory departments that test human specimens with many similar methods and tasks. Both departments had earlier purchased the same software package to support the daily laboratory testing and administrative operation. Our objective was to replace the flat file data heap with a modern database while preserving the original software’s strengths. This paper describes briefly the laboratory routine, our Structured Query Language (SQL) redesign concept, the outcome of the redesign project, and some lessons learned.
