Abstract

Localised proton magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy of the human brain is a new non-invasive technique which allows the detection of cerebral intermediary and oxidative metabolites (Hanstock et al, 1988). MR spectra can be obtained by using either single-volume acquisition sequences (such as STEAM, ISIS, VSE sequences) or multiple volume acquisition sequences such as the spectroscopic imaging (SI) technique which provides a display of metabolite maps (for a review, see Confort-Gouny et al., 1992a).
