Abstract
Any analysis of the behavioral treatment of cognitive disorders could cover a wide spectrum of psychological problems, ranging from the misperceptions and cognitive distortions present in most people’s thinking to the extreme and often bizarre beliefs and experiences of psychotic patients. In this chapter we have concentrated exclusively on recent advances and future perspectives in the treatment of schizophrenia. This is partly because other forms of cognitive disorders are covered elsewhere in this book (e.g., for depressed thinking, see Chapter 5, for cognitive distortions in phobic and obsessional disorders, see Chapter 8), but mainly because we believe that behavior therapists have paid insufficient attention to the nature and characteristics of schizophrenia, while paying a great deal of attention to the functional aspects of “schizophrenic” behaviors. As we hope to show in this chapter, there are strong grounds for holding a mixed biological-behavioral model of schizophrenia. We believe that some cognizance of such a model should in part determine future developments in research and treatment of schizophrenia over the next decade.
