Abstract
The optical spectra of poly(p-phenylene vinylene) thin films have been measured at 298 K and 77 K. The absorption band of the conjugated polymer backbone 1s located at 3.09 eV and 1s split Into several components at 77 K. This absorption can most reasonably be described on the basis of vibrationally coupled exciton states. The evolution of the spectrum of the precursor polymer from monomer, dimer and oligomeric sequences is discussed.
