Abstract

Alcoholism is a disorder characterized by a persistent and progressive pattern of ethanol ingestion which, over time, results in the loss of control over drinking and a narrowing of interests in activities other than those related to drinking. Alcoholism and alcohol abuse are the nation’s leading health problem in terms of impact on the economy. The monetary and societal costs of alcoholism are staggering, amounting to more than 117 billion dollars per year.
