Abstract
Tracheostomy is a surgical procedure commonly performed in critically ill patients. Formerly, the majority of tracheostomies were performed in the operating theatre mainly by head-and-neck surgeons. However, since Ciaglia et al. introduced percutaneous dilatational tracheostomy (PDT) in 1985, many intensive care physicians consider it to be a core procedure, suitable to be performed at the bedside.
