Abstract
It is now a commonplace that environmental pollution is a major public concern. The immediate reasons for this concern are not difficult to detect, for they assail our senses every day: our eyes smart with smog; our ears throb with the noise of automobiles, aircraft and construction tools; we are assailed by the odors of polluted waters and the sight of mounting heaps of rubbish.
