Abstract

Steroid hormones intricately shape the landscape of cancer in breast, prostate, ovarian, and endometrial tissues, playing a pivotal role in tumorigenesis and progression. The dynamic interplay between these hormones and cancer cells reveals a nuanced relationship where steroid hormones can both promote and inhibit cancer progression. Understanding the complex nature of this interaction is vital for unraveling the intricacies of tumor development in these hormone-driven malignancies. Dysregulation in steroid hormone signaling pathways is a key driver, contributing to the pathophysiology of hormone-driven cancers. The chapter delves into the multifaceted nature of steroid hormones and their dual impact on tumorigenesis. The therapeutic landscape for these cancers has been significantly influenced by insights into steroid hormone dynamics. Hormonal treatments, such as those tailored for breast and prostate cancers, exemplify strategies aimed at manipulating steroid hormone actions to impede cancer progression. However, the narrative is complex, with cancer cells being able to exploit steroid hormones, reminiscent of evasion mechanisms observed in the contexts of other cancers. This chapter comprehensively explores the intricate relationship between steroid hormones and cancers of the breast, prostate, ovarian, and endometrial tissues.
