The factors controlling the survival of enteric bacteria in the marine environment have intrigued scientists for decades, and numerous studies have explored the fate of Escherichia coli and other enteric bacteria following their exposure to seawater. Most of these studies were driven by public health concerns, while others attempted to expand our basic understanding of bacterial responses to this complex environmental stress.
