Conclusion
New molecular techniques now play a tremendous role in the field of emerging infectious disease, as evidenced by the discovery of KSHV in 1994. Within only two years the entire genome of this new human herpesvirus was sequenced. Although initial studies were inconclusive about the role of KSHV in KS, the accumulation of more methodologically sound studies provides strong evidence of the causal association. Other noninfectious cofactors are certain to contribute to KS pathogenesis, however, as the current epidemiological evidence demonstrates KSHV is almost certainly the causative infectious agent for KS.
