Abstract
In the pseudobinary system Nb(Rh1−xPdx)3, as in other similar alloy systems, a series of polytypic phases occurs which have related, closepacked structures with systematically varying stacking sequences. After rapid quenching from the melt, the stacking sequence of these polytypes is often changed.
A phase m-Nb(Rh.75Pd.25)3 of the PuGa3 type with a 12-layer stacking sequence has been prepared by RSP; this phase is probably metastable and displaces an equilibrium phase of the VCo3 type with a 6-layer structure. Occurrence of the m phase can be rationalized in terms of the sequence of the Jagodzinski notation (fraction of h-like packing) and the variation of the diffraction pattern with composition.
