Differentiation of Oils in Tatarstan Based on the Composition of Monoaromatic Steranes

Abstract

Two types of oils are distinguished in Tatarstan based on the composition and content of monoaromatic steranes (MAS) in 42 oil samples from reservoirs of twelve units from the Vorobievsky Horizon (Middle Devonian) to the Bashkirian stage (Middle Carboniferous). The first type includes oils from terrigenous Devonian reservoir rocks (also termed as subdomanik rocks, with the age varying from the Middle Devonian Vorobievsky to the Upper Devonian Kynovsko horizons). The second type was generated from overlying reservoirs (group “Domanik +”). In terms of MAS content and distribution of genetic parameters characterizing the MAS composition, the distinguished oil types turned out to be close to the previously identified types of dispersed organic matter (DOM) from Domanik sediments in the northern and central regions of the Volga-Urals: oils from the terrigenous Devonian reservoirs resemble DOM from the South Tatar Arch surrounding (Kama–Belaya and Mukhano-Erokhovsky basins); oil from the “Domanik +” reservoir rocks are close to the DOM of the South Tatar Arch. The distinguished groups are similar in them maturity parameters (dia- + reg-C27; S/(S + R), C29-α−reg:/C27–C29). The greatest difference between the oil types is observed in the C28/ΣC27–C29 parameter (distributions are not intersected), MAS content, and С27/ΣC27–C29, dia-C27-S/reg-C27-S values. Data on the MAS composition and content suggest that all oils in Tatarstan were generated from Domanik deposits or rocks with close MAS composition. At the same time, the source rocks of oils from “Domanik+” reservoirs are confined to the South Tatar Arch, while oils in sub-Domanik reservoirs was derived from its surrounding (Kama-Belaya and/or Mukhanovo–Erokhovsky basins). In addition, oils, as DOM from the studied region, show the correlation between С28/ΣC27–C29 and dia-С27-S/reg-С27-S, although available concepts suggest that these two parameters are independent.
