Retraction to: Oncogene https://doi.org/10.1038/s41388-018-0428-4, published online 07 August 2018

The Editors-in-Chief have retracted this article. After publication, the authors contacted the journal requesting a correction to replace some of the data in Figs. 2 and 6, stating that the errors occurred due to similarities in the file names. The errors included overlap among multiple images in Figs. 2a, 2f and 6e.

Further checks by the publisher found that the images provided for the correction still contained data that appeared to originate from the same sample representing different cell lines or treatments. Additionally, the study used SMMC-7721 cells as one of the models of hepatocellular carcinoma, but this cell line is known to be contaminated with HeLa cervical cancer cells, making it unsuitable for liver cancer research.

The Editors-in-Chief therefore no longer have confidence in the presented data and the conclusions of this article.

All authors have agreed to this retraction, but not the wording of this retraction notice.
