Abstract

By preparing the most highly crystalline samples possible and very carefully optimizing all the experimental variables, ultra-high resolution 29Si magic-angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectra have been obtained for completely siliceous zeolite ZSM-5. The spectra show a degree of resolution hitherto not thought possible for rigid crystalline materials, having natural linewidths without any spectral enhancement of ∼5 Hz (∼0.06 p.p.m.), an improvement of an order of magnitude, and exhibit clearly resolved resonances for 21 of the 24 postulated lattice sites. The resolution is largely maintained with variation of temperature and in the presence of organic sorbates, making it possible to identify clearly the numbers of lattice sites in the resulting new lattice structures.
