Abstract

Medicinal plants are globally valuable sources of herbal products, which could vary significantly in contents. The classification, identification and discrimination of these closely-related plants is a crucial task to ensure the quality of the raw materials. In this research, an easy and accurate analytical method for classifying different plants was developed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics analysis. Ninety samples of Algerian plants (region of El-Oued) were collected and analyzed using FTIR spectroscopy (4000–500 cm−1), principal component analysis (PCA), and hierarchical clustering (HCA) analysis to determine the differences and similarities between them. Based on FTIR data, the HCA and PCA distributed successfully the samples tested in separate and clear informational groups. Onto light of these results, the developed method could be used for the identification and discrimination of closely-related plant species.
